SATURDAY. Sep 04 Discussion
Updated Saturday morning at 0710. Minor changes made to today's portion of the discussion.
The upper level ridge of high pressure will weaken and move into E MT by afternoon. Look for SW flow to develop over the area by early afternoon with winds becoming windy in the mid afternoon with gusts in the 30 mph range. Strong valley temperature inversions should break out by around 0900 and allow for good mixing in all elevations. Scattered wet and dry storms will be possible across the Salmon River Corridor east to SW MT and NE to the Lewistown area during the late afternoon and evening hours. Temps will be slightly above normal which should lead to afternoon rh levels in the 13-23% range.
Valley temperature inversions and mid slope thermal belt development is not expected tonight due to the passage of the front and associated upper low.
Extended Outlook:
The next wetting system arrives on Sunday bringing with it the passage of a strong and wet cold front that will bring widespread wetting rainfall...cooler temperatures and lower snow levels through Monday. While GOOD to EXCELLENT dispersion is expected...it will be wet. Tuesday could be the next dry day as a weak ridge moves across the region.

SUNDAY, Sep 05 Discussion
Forecast updated Saturday at 0715 am. Minor changes made to introduce the mention of Scattered wet storms over much of MT ahead of the passing the front
A strong, wet and cool upper level trough will move SE across the region today brining widespread precipitation. Scattered wet storms will be possible along and ahead of the passing front over SE MT. Look for lowering snow levels (to around 7000 feet) to occur. The center of the upper low (and surface front) will promote GOOD to EXCELLENT smoke dispersion conditions today...though it will be wet. E MT could remain dry and breezy through the day as the front remains well to the west.
Extended Outlook:
It now appears that Monday will no longer be the wettest day. Latest model data moves this system into the Dakotas by late morning. However Monday will be a cool day with lingering showers over the higher terrain. Conditions will warm dry on Tuesday and Wednesday as a weak ridge of high pressure develops over E MT and as SW flow develops over W MT and ID.
